Colleen Renee LaRose is your everyday American woman. She’s a sister, and a friend, who after converting to Islam dubbed herself Jihad Jane and along with a group of six other Irish Islam terrorists planned to murder the Swedish cartoonist Lars Vilks who happened to be responsible for portraying the prophet Muhammad with the body of a dog back in 2007. LaRose has since been arrested and is being detained in Ireland on the aforementioned accusations of terrorism and for placing a $100,000 bounty on the head of Vilks.

But online, she grew increasingly devoted to a loose band of what authorities say were violent co-conspirators from around the world. They found her after she posted a YouTube video in June 2008 saying she was “desperate to do something somehow to help” ease the suffering of Muslims, the indictment said.

What is most disturbing about Jihad Jane is not necessarily her intense fascination with Islam or her attempts to murder someone who allegedly made light of the prophet Muhammad, no, what seems to be most unsettling about LaRose is her attempts at raising funds for terrorism via the internet. With the internet being the easiest, fastest, and most convenient way to grasp the attention of a wide variety of individuals in the least amount of time, LaRose took to the internet as a means to fund her inevitable trip to Ireland, and to  build contact with other Muslim martyrs even going as far as offering to marry a contact from South Asia so that he could move to Europe.

Oddly enough before dubbing herself Jihad Jane Colleen LaRose was your average woman taking care of her boyfriends father in Philadephia, PA. One who neighbors and friends said kept mostly to herself, LaRose is one of those rare examples that anyone; the neighbor down the street, the girl sitting behind you in class, or even your janitor is capable of having a completely different persona than what we see everyday.
“You could get all the thrills of participation in an illegal clandestine act in the comfort of your own bedroom,” he said. “This is someone who, I think, because of all the communicative power of the internet is able to enter into something that is larger than herself.”
