Reminisce With M.I.S.S.: Sheila E

Sheila E, born Sheila Escovedo (1957) comes from a family of musical legends. Her father, Pete Escovedo, and his brother, Coke, performed percussion in Carlos Santana’s band. Her uncles, Alex and Javier Escovedo, were punk pioneers in the California scene, respectively. Then there is her godfather, Tito Puente, is arguably the greatest timbalero to ever live. It’s no wonder that she is an instrumental virtuoso and internationally recognized performer.

Sheila tends to be most noted for her work with Prince. She joined his band during the Purple Rain recording sessions. Unfortunately, much is written about her finest accomplishments coming while in the shadow of Prince. But I think that depends on who you ask. Besides, how can you talk about someone’s greatest accomplishments while they are still alive and looking better than ever?

I come from a large Latin family, and if you ask about Sheila E it’s no question that she is a reverable musician among the largely male dominated field. She launched her solo career in 1984 with The Glamorous Life, classic! And opened for Prince during the Purple Rain Tour. In 1985 she released Romance 1600 which gave way to the hit “A Love Bizarre.” Attached in this post you will find an amazing video of her performing alongside Prince, who looks divine in his purple heels and trench coat! That man does not play.

Check out this video of Sheila E and Prince breakin it down!

Here is she playing timbales for Gloria Estefan; Carlos Santana and Jose Feliciano are also on this track. Isn’t it lovely how things come full circle? The magic of creativity in motion.

Sheila E is still very active in the music community, whether performing with family, or during special events. Her foundation, Elevate Hope,  is dedicated to providing abused and abandoned children with an alternative method of therapy through music and the arts, and funding special services and programs that assist the needs of children. Chronicles Of Every Diva, C.O.E.D, is a band she formed with two other members, Kat Dyson and Rhonda Smith. They rocked a few tour dates in ’09, be sure to keep updated by checking their website.

For A Little Girl With A Drum Set by Dane Youssef

Yeah, this is for a little girl with a drum set…. named Sheila Escovedo.

So much was made of this nice special lady’s work with Prince Rogers Nelson.. and so little of anything else.

That little purple punk pop Yoda made a lot of timeless magic… and immortal legends out of his illustrious ranks: The Revolution, Vanity, Apollonia–all winners, just like the once and future Prince.

Yes, the Prince of Pop had many great protégés he took under his wing.

And yes, yes, yes. We all know she built a kingdom of music with the help of Prince.

But hell, she wasn’t the only great she worked with. When the ex-Beatle Ringo Starr formed a band in his honor… she got behind him too. And that’s damned good. The best should always work with the best.

I saw her in “Ford Fairlane.” Nice, but the poor girl wasn’t given much to do there. She looked nice, and she had that attitude.

But the best I EVER saw of her in was “Sign O’ The Times” where she was on-par with his royal funkiness, the bad one himself. She played those drums like she was trying to destroy them while making music at the same time. She blasted them.

If not for Prince’s always-superior work on everything, she may have very easily stolen the entire damn show.

So fiery, so electric, such raging sex appeal and hyperkinetic energy with those drums. No wonder the bitch performed with Prince himself.

She considers herself a drummer first, and a singer second. I consider her first-and-foremost (and solely), a musician. From “The Glamorous Life” to “The Glorious Train.”

This femme rocker to this day, appears only in high-profile stuff– 36th NAACP Image Awards,BRIT Awards, FOX’s The Next Great American Band, So You Think You Can Dance and the Latin Grammy Awards–just to name a few. That’s just the headline, folks.

And the most currently, the CMT reality show “Gone Country.”
And because she’s a star from way-back and we’re always asking “What’s happening right now? What’s next?” Where are they now?

I hope she’s doing well for herself now, wherever she is.

And still a musician. Still wailing those drums…

Are you smiling little girl, wherever you are?

    –Standing Ovation, Dane Youssef
