Little M.I.S.S. Frustrated: Self Serve Checkouts

Why can't I work this machine?!

Why can't I work this machine?!

When self-serve checkouts had their debut in supermarkets near my home I was pretty excited about it. I won’t lie, I couldn’t wait to test it out. For me, what started off as something fun that made me feel independent and in control of my shopping experience has turned into something I blatantly avoid when I need to go and pick up a carton of milk.

My frustration for the innovative contraptions came innocently when I tried to be environmentally friendly and bring my own bag to the store. I placed the bag in the bagging area, started scanning my goods when the machine screamed “UNEXPECTED ITEM IN THE BAGGING AREA!”. You could understand my embarrassment when everyone started staring at me like I’d tried to stuff a small child into the bag or something.

I do understand their reasoning for such precautionary measures. A lot of people do tend to abuse the system; scanning through prawns as potatoes, fine chocolates as apples.. you know, modern day thieves. I myself am too chicken to pull that kind of stunt at my local  as I’ve got a shopping attendant peering over my shoulder, and a giant machine yelling at me. However, when I am feeling really confident; I waltz in with a basket full of groceries, ready for the onslaught of confusion and armed with a bucket full of change. Because, the best way of dealing with your frustrations is to tackle them head on, isn’t it?

Luckily here in MPLS there is a button that you can press bag/box. Then the voice shuts up and you get to use your own bag.

  2. Hot damn! They need those here in London!

I think I am a pretty pathetic theif, i started as a ‘potato-scanner’ getting my mushrooms and cherries for a measley 35C or something… but now all I am game to do is
scan my ‘pink lady’ apples as (the slightly cheaper by all of 50c) ‘sundowner apple.

I know I know. Im baaaad.
