Blissed Out Buzzsaw: The Dum Dum Girls

The Dum Dum Girls, Dee Dee, Frankie Rose, Jules, and Bambi, are a four piece fuzz-pop girl group from Los Angeles. Over the past year I’ve been anticipating every release from them, luckily they have a full-length album coming out soon. I’m really into the hazy strumming sounds of the garage revivalist groups in indie rock. Recently, I had a chance to catch the girls play at the Ironhorse Music Hall in Northampton, MA opening for King Khan and the BBQ Show. The venue is on a side street in the quaint artsy town nestled in the mountains of Western Massachusetts. Northampton was named “Number One Best Small Arts Town in America” by author John Villani and one of the “Top 25 Arts Destinations” in the nation by AmericanStyle magazine. So, sometimes we get rad shows to come around our way. This was one of them.

The girls took the stage (after setting up pretty much all of their equipment themselves) in mini vintage style dresses, sharp cuts with bangs, perfectly stained makeup with black cat eye liner, tights, and low heels. Their delicate demeanor captivated the room as they started to play.  My buddy Paul, a drummer in some local bands, noticed that drummer, Frankie Rose, didn’t use any cymbals; he was impressed. Another performance aspect we noted was that the harmonies between Dee Dee and the guitarist singing backup really amplified the feeling of the songs and heightened the dramatic effect. Rarely do I hear backup vocals that are that good. The set, layered with vocals, riffs, hums, and drums coupled with the low-lit laid back ambiance was perfect.

After the show Dee Dee was taking care of the merch table, being Captain Nerd-Out I went over to say hello and buy two records, one for myself, and the other for the chap who came along. Check them out! They have a new album, “I Will Be” set to be released on Sub Pop Records March 30th. Here is what the label had to say about the release:

“I Will Be” is the debut full-length by the Dum Dum Girls. Produced by Dee Dee and Richard Gottehrer (Strangeloves, Voidoids, Blondie, The Go-Gos and, more recently, The Raveonettes), I Will Be is neither lo-fi nor too polished. Just under thirty minutes with eleven songs, it’s a short tribute to love, fun and the classic pop form of the ’60’s girl groups and early punk rockers.”
