Where did you take the photo?
November 18th at the fox theater in oakland
What were you thinking before you took the photo?
Raphael is getting it in – let’s get this.
What were you thinking after you took the photo?
yes! the dip. dip again, boo. dip again.
What’s interesting to you about the photo?
catching fun action shots during shows can be a bit of a challenge with changing lighting conditions and slower shutter speeds (lots of room for blurry photos). this photo was taken right around the time i realized that i was going to love shooting this show – so i got way more into it. i got right up against the stage, basically set my camera onstage and tilted it upwards slightly to make it look like raphael was sort of falling into the camera (excited seher = fun with angles time). when he leaned in, he simply completed the concept and i had a moment of photo nerd glee. it was awesome. qualitatively, i also like the contrast of complementary color between the red suit and green lights, the wire on the floor pronouncing the perspective, and the main light conveniently illuminating the trademark “r” on the drumset.
What camera did you use?
nikon d300 with an 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 lens
Any current projects, plans, ideas you’d like to share?
i’ve historically shot mostly concerts, which i will continue to do, but of late my interests have been directed towards branching out more. i really want to hit most all areas of photography. my current area of focus is setting up my in-home studio and working more on fashion and studio shoots in general. i just finished a shoot with a philadelphia based designer, NIC*FISH, which went quite well – currently in post-production with those photos – look out for them in the upcoming NIC*FISH lookbook. i’m building a great team and brainstorming some awesome fashion shoot concepts to come with my stylist and friend, lauren stanton. other things – shooting a wedding in the british virgin islands next year, a UK based muralist will be stenciling street pieces using my photos, i’ve recently begun talks with a dope graphic designer to brainstorm ideas for a photobook, hopefully shooting images for some album artwork before the year is up, and hopefully more still! one thing at a time
