M.I.S.S. Muses: Wisdom

Andrew Zuckerman's Wisdom

Andrew Zuckerman's Wisdom

This week, my muse is a source of many future inspirations. You can see this source in print, video and on the interweb, and it goes by the name of Wisdom. Wisdom, by Andrew Zuckerman, is more than a beautifully published book. It is a project presenting the thoughts of a range of people who have made a mark on the world and shared their voices. For the Wisdom project, contributors are interviewed, offer their thoughts on the subject of wisdom, and their ideas are captured on film, in print, and through portrait.

The group participating in this project is inspiring in itself. Each of the people was chosen as they have made a name for themselves in some way, so by default the group consists of an inspiring bunch of people in action.  Think Andrew Wyeth, Rosamunde Pilcher, Judi Dench, Yoko Ono, Robert Redford, Nelson Mandela, and more. That one project can bring together such a diverse and extraordinary sampling of people is amazing. If one person’s idea can bring in this talent, wisdom, and power, what can my ideas bring together?

To put Wisdom together, director, photographer, and author Andrew Zuckerman targeted movers and shakers of the world. He had the help of Desmond Tutu, who wrote letters inviting people to be a part of the project. Once they had the contributors, Zuckerman and his crew traveled the world with their equipment, a white background, and questions specifically for each contributor. I’m moved and inspired that an idea, people believing in it, and hard work brought such a beautiful product to life.

Muses for much more to come can be found in the content of the interviews. Zuckerman chose to focus on love, work, the environment, and conflict resolution as he asked the powerful contributors about their life achievements and what they’ve learned. There are so many sound bites and quotes to take from the interviews! In going over some of them, I found the following themes:

  • Take action
  • Be decent to others
  • Be true to you
  • Keep on
  • Get to work
  • It’s not going to be perfect
  • Think of others
  • Love
  • Learn

I’m learning from the above to take this inspiration and make something of it that reflects me. Stay tuned.
