M.I.S.S. Muses: Get To Work

As promised, last week’s muse is the source for another week of inspiration. For Andrew Zuckerman’s Wisdom, artist and photographer Chuck Close was interviewed and said:

“I always thought that inspiration is for amateurs. The rest of us just show up and get to work. If you wait around for the clouds to part and a bolt of lightning to strike you in the brain, you’re not gonna make an awful lot of work.”

This week’s inspiration: take action and get to work!

Put the pen to the paper and just get working

Put the pen to the paper and just get working

It’s not necessarily easy to begin or complete a project when not inspired. It is possible though. The fact is, in order to create anything, you have to start. Maybe the result is a rough draft or something you completely throw away. You may change your mind or direction. But in taking action steps, at least you have what your project isn’t or perhaps even something to build upon.

For me, there are times when I absolutely have to write all of my ideas down and capture all the inspiration while it’s flowing from me. There are definitely other times and assignments where I am completely frozen on how or where to start. However, in starting, something tangible is created. Even if it’s not “it” or something I’m in love with, something comes into existence and that can be adjusted, edited, changed, etc. For me, the big picture is to share with people, and last I heard, nobody is coming inside my head to hear what I have to share. So, although it may not be perfect, starting something is a step in the right direction for my big picture and completing what’s at hand.

Have I been underwhelmed by things I’ve written or sent out as final product? You bet. I’ve also found times I use the first picture I take in a series where I’m trying to get it “just right” or the first phrasing I try to improve upon is the one I like the most. I never know how many attempts it will take or how satisfied I will be. I do know that my underlying goal is to connect with and inspire people, which doesn’t happen without something to put out there.

Now that you’ve read this, stay in action, trust in yourself, and take another step in getting to work.
