Designer Tamara Bavdek believes lace is to textiles what gold is to metals. But rather than taking lace by the yard to create clothing or appliques, she gives lace new life as jewelry. It all started when Tamara went for a 60s -inspired, boyish bob hair cut and feminized her look by adorning her ears with layers of big and long earrings. She began creating earrings using cutouts of lace because the designs are not only beautiful and versatile but light weight, which allowed her to go as big and long as she wanted with the jewelry.
After many compliments and encouragement, Tamara started her line of jewelry called This Ilk, “Ilk” signifying “of the same class or kind.” What started out as just earrings soon grew into a collection of necklaces, anklets, brooches, bracelets, and belts. Using stiffened lace, Tamara creates charming, feminine pieces with a touch of modernist simplicity.
The collection is separated into groups, with each named after feminine characters inspired by the lace used. The Athena group is a collection of large earrings and a necklaces that have design elements you might find in ancient Greek design. The Leia group is a collection of bracelets, belts, necklaces and earrings with a geometric design reminiscent of intergalactic film Star Wars. The entire collection is priced moderately, with the pieces ranging from $22 to $48.
