What happens when two of Dell’s more popular machines get together and make sweet, sweet computer love? They have a ridiculously sexy baby. Proving that every once a while form really does triumph over function, Dell’s newest luxury laptop, the Adamo XPS, is billed as the world’s thinnest laptop. At just .65-inch thick and weighing in at slightly over three pounds, the Adamo XPS makes last Spring’s Adamo and the MacBook Air look downright obese in comparison. Featuring an incredibly unique and innovative design, the Adamo XPS looks like nothing else out there. It doesn’t open with a conventional mechanical latch, rather, you slide your finger over a heat sensor to release the keyboard. Completely open, the entire computer is propped up by the angled keyboard and the back edge of the Adamo XPS’ high resolution screen. And yet, between the impossible thinness and the funky design, the engineers at Dell still managed to cram in a 1.4Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 4GB DDR3 800 memory, and a 128GB solid-state drive. There’s also built-in 802.11n wireless and two USB 2.0 ports. Rated at just two and a half hours, the battery life is pretty abysmal. But considering the design doesn’t seem to lend itself too well to actually sitting on laps, you’ll probably spend most of your time sitting at a desk having it plugged it anyway.
There isn’t a firm launch date in place quite yet, but Dell is promising these bad boys will be shipping out in time for the holiday season. Good thing, too, because with a starting price of $1799 you’ll probably have to get someone really drunk on the eggnog to give you one as a gift this year.
