The first word that comes to mind when I think of Pharrell Williams is “fresh,” the type of man that will rock a Hermes crocodile skin hoodie with Nike Lunar Everyday runners pushin’ a Ferrari Enzo. His look always seems to be effortlessly pulled together mixing designer with street. While I am not a fan of celebrity fashion lines, Pharrell’s Billionaire Boys Club and Ice Cream lines which he co-designs have some nice gear for the fellas! It seems to do especially well in Japan alongside brands like Visvim and Neighborhood.
Pharrell is a design junkie for sure. The beauty of it all is the his zeitgeist point of view churns out pure quality. He produces music along with Chad Hugo as The Neptunes. They’ve produced hits for Madonna, Gwen Stefani, Snoop Dog, and Justin Timberlake among many others. One of my all time favorites is Jay-z’s “Excuse Me Miss,” gotta love it. The latest track The Neptunes have produced is Jennifer Lopez’s “Fresh Out The Oven.” Did you know that he wrote the classic Wreckx-n-Effect jam “Rump Shaker” ah, a leader of the times. Luckily for us it doesn’t stop there and that since his style and taste level are so on point. Add jewelry designer, furniture designer, and entrepreneur to his credit. He co-owns Brooklyn Machine Works, keep reading for some info on the latest project he is working on.
Besides his endless list of projects, he always comes correct whether he is walking a red carpet or heading off to the studio. He carries his laptop and things in a PURPLE croc Hermes tote and collects vintage Haut a Courroies bags, just don’t confuse these with manpurses, on Pharrell these are travel bags, my darlings. I love that Pharrell could be wearing a tee shirt, jeans, sneakers and a hat and still be the freshest dude on the block, however, I will take a dapper P anyday. Either way both come natural and never look overdone or like he’s trying, (a couple of people come to mind)
“Style is about who you are, where you’re going, what’s comfortable,” he says with a shrug, stepping out onto the wraparound balcony where the photographer waits. “It’s your attitude that makes it hot.” (via Paper Magazine)
If you’ve never been to an N*E*R*D show I suggest catching them the next time they are in your town. Their live show is a blend of rock (usually two sets of drums with guitars), electronic (Chad on the keys), and hip hop funk and the energy they deliver can be felt in the air. I’ve been to shows where the music is great, but the stage show lacks appeal and it gets boring. This group is easy on the eyes and definitely exciting to see. N*E*R*D’s next album, Instant Gratification, is slated to be released in the Spring of 2010. Should be interesting since they recently added singer, Rhea, to the mix.
Pharrell is a producer, so it’s only natural that he is a collaborative artist. Beyond the music industry he has worked with artist, Takashi Murakami, French design duo Domeau & Pérès, luxury brand Louis Vuitton, and most recently with Brooklyn Machine Works on a new fixie bike which uses Water Buffalo skin (in yellow!) throughout the design, so far only one is on display in Paris but this project looks pretty rad, apparel to be released as well.
