Katy Perry hosted the MTV European Music Awards the other night in Berlin with twelve glamorous and sometimes strange costume changes. She kicked off the night with an homage to Liza Minneli in “Cabaret” transforming the stage into the ‘Katy Kat Club’ and performed a medley of songs which included lead nominees, Lady Gaga and Kings of Leon. A pretty fabulous opening. The night continued with the “Cabaret” theme with props for Katy to perch herself in like a giant cocktail glass, a glittery stiletto, a swing, and a crescent moon. Other costumes included a pink feather jacket with a black corset, a turquoise rubber bikini, a midnight blue flapper dress, and a lace trimmed corset and pearls, signature glamour looks of Perry. The more strange choices were the bright pink dress with holes cut out of it and the nude top with the conical bra with light up nipples being the accessory, because being avant garde and edgy is so ‘in.’ Katy has always played with different stage looks and it’s quite fun to watch her.
One designer responsible for much of Katy’s red carpet ensembles is Indian designer Manish Arora. He’s an incredibly talented designer with five flagships in New Delhi and Mumbai. His work is quite avant garde with vivid use of color and imaginative forms. Arora has been noted as the “John Galliano of India.” Check him out if you haven’t already.
While I can’t say that I listen to Katy’s music often, after researching her for this week’s post I must say that the girl can perform. Her vocals and stage presence really what sets her apart from her contemporaries. She has a handle on her style, she’s definitely not afraid to try something new. As a major fan of cosmetics, Katy reigns supreme in this department! Flawless. She’s got an MTV Unplugged CD/DVD coming out November 17th where she performs her hits with a live band in another beautiful gown.
