We Got the Beat: Maluca

Maluca is Mad Decent's newst signee.

What do you get when you combine acid rock , a Dominicana born and bred in NYC proper, merengue, a wicked band of backup dancers and a cowbell? Meet Maluca Mala, the latest signee to dance label Mad Decent. The chick has some of the hypest energy on stage we’ve seen in a while, and is blowing us away with her leading single “El Tigeraso”, a knowing diss to all the dudes who can’t help themselves but holla everytime a girl walks down the street.

Heavily influenced early on by the tracks her DJ father used to play, the 27-year-old artist born Natalie Ann Yepez raps over beats that can only be described as falling under that umbrella of the currently hot, new “genre” (if we want to be that specific – I think its more like an undefinable combo of things) known as “ghettotech.”  House and disco beats, representative of other Mad Decent artists such as Rye Rye and DJ Blaqstarr, are layered over traditional Latin sounds such as cumbia, bachata and merengue and blended with elements of house, disco, tropical, and hip-hop. Add in Diplo-approved sound bites like animals squeals and cow bells, and you got yourself a certified club banger. And this is only the first single we’re talkin’ about!

Neon rave-esque colors and a splash of street make for a D-I-Y style all her own!

If that description alone wasn’t enough to make you a fan, consider this – in a recent interview, Maluca described her style as “Frida Khalo goes to a rave in the Tropics.” One question: where’s our glowsticks?! A mix of D-I-Y and essentials like florescent yellow jumpsuits and leather jackets, Maluca’s fashion choices reflect her street appeal while still keeping threads of her Latin influences in her styling. But don’t forget keeping it homemade – Maluca was one of the first to rep her stylist Alex Milk’s “Come Clean” hats, fitteds with a mirrored nameplate sewn on the front. Our favorite look by far from this Dominicana!

We hope Maluca Mala’s album drops soon, but in the meantime look for her on iTunes, and listen to “El Tigeraso” here. Also, peep this video of her performing with her backup dancers at the Fader Mag release party… we told you the girl was loca (but only in the best way, of course!)!
