Halloween is my favorite holiday. I love any reason to have to put a costume together. This year for Halloween, I am DJing a costume party Sweet 16 the night before All Hallows Eve, and and a proper Halloween party the night of. Since I’m going to be behind the tables I decided to look the part and go as DJ Lance Rock from Yo Gabba Gabba!
- Orange Faux Fur or Fleece (I used fleece)
- Orange Top (I used a thermal shirt)
- Orange Bottom (I used leggings)
- Yellow fabric or felt (I used fleece)
- White fabric or felt (I used felt)
- Black Thick Plastic Rimmed Glasses
- Needle & Thread (or sewing machine if you’ve got one)
- Fabric Glue
- Measuring Tape and/or Yardstick
- Card stock (I used some junk mail)
I started by creating the hat. I folded my fleece so It was 4 pieces thick, because I wanted the hat to be a little more sturdy than the fleece was. I pinned them together to secure them and then I used an existing hat that I had as a basic template, adding an inch to either side for seam allowance. I also made it a little bit taller because I wanted the hat to be bigger. I traced the shape I wanted onto the fleece using a pencil, and cut it out, and then hand stiched around the edges making sure I went through all 4 pieces of fleece. When it was complete, I turned it inside out, so the stitching did not show.
I also cut out two templates for the dual layer burst on the hat, using some junk mail that was kind of stiff. I pinned the templates to the fleece and felt, traced the templates onto the white and yellow fleece and cut them out.
and I glued them to the hat.
To make my top, I placed a piece of my felt on top of my shirt and pinned it in place. I felt around for the shape of the entire collar of the shirt and traced it with a pencil. Next I used my yardstick to create straight lines down the felt with my pencil for the stripes. Once the felt was marked, I unpinned it from the shirt, and began to cut it out.
I used the discarded middle of my collar/stripes piece of felt to create 1 stripe on my yellow fleece, by pinning it down and tracing it. Once I cut it out, I folded that strip in half lengthwise, pinned it to itself, and cut it in half so it was two pieces.
I placed the stripe and collar in the correct place on the shirt and pinned it in place, and then added the yellow thinner stripe next to it. Then I got to gluing, removing the pins as I secured the felt and fleece to the shirt with the glue.
Next I cut another wide piece of white felt to make a belt. I kinda winged it, but made sure it was long enough to wrap around the shirt completely. I took a sharpie and wrote ROCK on middle of the belt, pinned it in place, and glued it to the shirt as well.
I got my glasses ready, put on my orange leggings and…..
