It’s been nearly three years since prolific Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodovar’s last triumphant film, Volver, was released in 2006. But now, the director is back with the upcoming release of his film Broken Embraces slated for late November, 2009, and I couldn’t be happier. As every good cinephile knows, an Almodovar picture is an event the film world salivates for, one that immediately brightens up the filmic landscape and replenishes our imaginative minds that have been depleted by crappy summer blockbusters and Halloween horror build-up. Broken Embraces, already the Official Selection of the 2009 Cannes Film Festival as well as the Closing Night Selection at the New York Film Festival, promises to do just that. Time Magazine is hailing Almodovar muse Penelope Cruz’s performance in the film as “luminous” and “sexy”, while Paper Magazine calls Broken Embraces “a rapturous tale of love, obsession, secrets, lies and movies”.
Lies, sex, obsession, Cruz and Almodovar? We are dreaming of this one already! Preview the teaser trailer below, and keep checking in with M.I.S.S. for a full-length review to come closer to the Sony Pictures Classics November release of Broken Embraces.
