Where did you take the photo?
I took the photo around Carroll Street at 5th Avenue in Brooklyn. There are huge, beautiful, old trees in this particular neighborhood. I like to walk down 3rd Street from Prospect Park down to 4th Avenue. The street is massive; broader than Broadway…
What were you thinking before you took the photo?
I saw the kid from a few meters away. It was still summer time. I was thinking he didn’t look very jazzed about being on summer break. He had a particular way of walking, and his shoulders and face carried a certain weight that kids his age don’t usually have. I was thinking he looked like a descendent of the Olmec Empire, you know!? That’s what caught me.
What were you thinking after you took the photo?
I hope one of those two frames came out…
What’s interesting to you about the photo?
I am attracted to the relationship between the heaviness of his expression and the lightness and delicate manner with which he is holding the little green sprig in his graceful young hands. It makes me think he’s going to be a good dude when he comes up.
What camera did you use?
Nikon 35 mm, 28 mm lens. Same ol’ same…the only thing I would want to call mine.
