Fashion has always danced a dangerous dance with the dark and macabre. From 1960s Edie Sedgewick, to 1980s Neo-Punk, to the modern goth on Gareth Pugh’s runways, fashion has always managed to glam up the darker edges of life. Keeping the mystery and intrigue alive, designers such as Jil Sander, Calvin Klein and L’Wren Scott have all taken gothic to new heights with boxy cuts, high-end fabrics, and epic shapes in steely shades. And with fashion leading the curve on the creation of what the fashion community has dubbed “The New Goth”, it’s a given that the artistry of makeup is not far behind. Inspired by the dramatically dark direction of fashion over the years, MAC presents a new collection for fall that is so thought out and detailed that it’s quite unlike anything the beauty world has seen before. We previously brought you a sneak peak, but now welcome to the real deal– MAC’s Style Black collection.
A hybrid of Fashion and Art, MAC’s Style Black proves that there is no more dramatic way to declare your desires than through the expressive shades of your lips, nails and eyes. The collection lays it foundation in skin that is perfected and whitened, drawing on virgin-like purity. Their skincare products–the MAC Volcanic Ash Exfoliator and Volcanic Ash Thermal Mask–are made with essential elements designed to buff away any dryness and create a canvas for night-black detailing.
New MAC signature shades, including a Glimmerglass lip shade in Bling Black (sheer black with golden pearl flecks) to a new Nail Lacquer in Baby Goth Girl (black with pinkish purple specks), are a part of the collection, making for a devilish color palate. Tim Burton-esque intensity is the inspiration behind the look of Style Black, most clear with the Greasepaint Stick, a new eye-lining tool. Just a small slathering of this stick will leave you with smoldering eyes not unlike the high fashion goth queens so popular as of late. If you’re more traditional, MAC’s Eye Kohl in Smolder will be a more-than-adequate substitute, giving you Factory Girl esque eyes in mere minutes.
Eye shadows in fall-perfect shades abound, with more versatile shades like Young Punk (mineralized black with pink frost) and high-drama options like Blue Flame (mineralized black with midnight blue pearl frost) taking you from your goth-lite days to full-blown wicked gothic night. MAC senior artist Terry Barber says it best when describing the intensity of the collection going from practical to pure fantasy: “quick, fast, sexy, rubbed-in black. Perfect but imperfect, wrong but right. Naive but knowingly place”.
