Betsey Johnson skipped the tents at Bryant Park this season to show her Spring 2010 collection at The Plaza. Rather than sashaying down the runway, models danced, posed and partied on the stage set up in The Plaza ballroom while the band Ida Maria played. I preferred this type of presentation to the runway because you could get up close and personal and see all the details of the outfits, accessories and makeup. Betsey showed no signs of retiring and this collection leaves no doubt that she’s got many more looks up her sleeve.
When I arrived at The Plaza for “Betsey‘s One Night Stand“, I was greeted outside by Betsey-fied bell hops – think footless tights, crinoline skirts and sky high heels. As you walked into the ballroom Ida Maria was set up on the left and all the models were on stage posing for pictures. Once in a while, Betsey would come out and join the models and dance and laugh with them. The lack of a runway didn’t mean that Betsey skipped her cartwheel, to the contrary, she did 2 (check out the video below to see for yourself)! It was amazing to see the BJ collection up close and personal but seeing Betsey execute her signature cartwheel was definitely a highlight of the show.
So, on to the clothes! The collections consisted mainly of the party dresses that BJ is known for and included signature florals, animal prints and bold colors. Trademark Betsey Johnson flourishes abounded from corsets, ruffles, lace, bows and crinolines. One of my favorite patterns was a custom trompe l’oeil with skulls hidden in the traditional design. The of-the-moment cropped jacket and sequins also had their place in the collection (as well as many others).
The models’ hair and makeup really added to the fun that the dresses evoked. Hair was big and teased and all the girls had giant tulle pieces in their hair that evoked flowers and feathers. The makeup was very glittery with dark smokey eyes and red glitter on the eyes and lips.
Ida Maria played a few tracks and then Betsey’s models danced to the tunes of The Clash, The Cure, Blondie, and The Ramones. The ladies in attendance wore their Betsey’s best and it was a sea of ladies in party dresses, with fuchsia BJ goodie bags, sipping pink champagne. It was definitely an affair to remember and my favorite presentation of the week.
