On the hunt for some antique jewelry with a modern twist? Look no further than Brooklyn’s own Digby & Iona jewelry. Designed by a former carpenter and furniture designer from Maine, Aaron Ruff started designing his own jewelry after concluding that there wasn’t much available on the market that he could either wear or afford. Curious to find out just who Digby and Iona are since a guy named Aaron creates the work? It turns out the company name is something Ruff created that he could hide behind as a furniture maker, but still be taken seriously. According to Ruff, he wanted to “fool people a bit into thinking that the jewelry was made by this Charles and Raye Eames type duo.”
Featured in New York Magazine, Page 6, Daily Candy, Lucky, Nylon, TimeOut, WWD, GenArt and Bust, Ruff’s forays into the jewelry world are delightfully funky creations that have firm roots in the past, but with a uniquely modern twist. My favorite line in the collection is “Vestige,” a perfect example of re-imagining delicate antique pieces with bold contemporary flair. The rings and necklaces developed for this line are all based on pieces that you could easily find in your grandmother’s jewelry box, but would definitely be included in your own based on the use of metals instead of costume stones.
Must have rings are the Oval Cut, Grand Oval and Emerald Cut. Each piece is beautifully cast around an original antique ring in sterling silver or bronze, with the center “stone” in gunmetal or vermeil. Wear them to work, then out for cocktails; you’re sure to get plenty of attention no matter where you go. Standout necklaces are the Crown Key, Crest Key, Gryphon Key and Keyhole. Much like the above-mentioned rings, the keys are all found and wearable art pieces in oxidized bronze, gold plate or gunmetal. Each necklace comes with a 24-inch chain, so they can easily be layered with other pieces in your own collection (or other Digby & Iona pieces). Don’t say we didn’t warn you that history could be so stylish and fun!
