French artist Zevs celebrated his first solo show last week at Art Statements Gallery in Hong Kong. Taking infamous haute couture logos, such as Chanel, Louis Vuitton and Dior, and other equally ubiquitous ones (such as Coca-Cola and Nike) Zevs splashes paint over them to give them that wet paint-drip look. Zevs also “modifies” adverstisements in his appropriately titled Visual Attack series, in which numerous models are given bloody eyes, complete with his signature drip treatment.
Always a fan of making art out of urban environments, and what already exists there, kudos to Zevs for re-interpreting the endless onslaught of consumerism into something thought provoking to look at. There’s a safety in the advertising we’re bombarded with everyday; Zevs shakes us out of that comfort zone. Liquidated Logos runs through Sept. 30.
