Raise your hand if you’ve ever stolen an article of clothing from your boyfriend, brother, dad, and/or best guy friend. (You’re not alone.) Now raise your hand if you’ve amassed a clothing collection from said male relative and/or friend. You’re not alone on this one, either. Each one of us have done it – we’ve snagged one of their comfy sweatshirts, perhaps super-soft pair of sweatpants, or maybe worn-in tee that fits us perfectly (not too tight, not too loose). We can’t blame you for it – guy’s clothes are irresistible, in that they’re ridiculously comfortable and some pieces are even chic when worn the right way.

Now, raise your hand if you’ve ever stolen a button-down shirt from your boyfriend, loved it, but wished there was a similar alternative that was created for women. Once again – you’re not alone. Men’s clothes are great, but one fact remains: they’re not tailored for a woman’s body. If you’ve been on a search for the perfect menswear-inspired garment (but made for your body), look no further: The Boyfriend Shirt solves these dilemmas. Crafted in New York City from 100% Italian cotton, The Boyfriend Shirt is a “classically constructed men’s button-down created for a woman.” Making its debut this past year at New York Fashion Week, The Boyfriend Shirt is the brain child of Scott Evan Wasserberger, founder of Nolita’s custom suit and shirt-making venue SEW and a third generation tailor.

The Boyfriend Shirt

Each shirt is made of 140 2-ply cotton broadcloth and features Mother of Pearl buttons.

Wasserberger’s grandfather Harry made his way to the United States from Germany to escape the Nazi occupation. Harry Wasserberger set up a tailoring shop in Brooklyn, a venture he eventually passed on to his son Artie (Scott’s father), who ran the business successfully for 60 years. Branching out on his own (sorta), Artie’s son Scott founded SEW on Nolita’s Mott Street in September 2007. From here, The Boyfriend Shirt was born. The garment is available in three hues: Dylan (light blue), Joseph (pink), and David (white). Each shirt is made of 140 2-ply cotton broadcloth and features Mother of Pearl buttons.
