West coast design duo William Anzevino and Richard Florence have come a long way from colour change fabric and Andy Warhol t-shirts! The pair initially worked together as artists and stumbled onto the fashion scene when commissioned by the Warhol Museum for the range of tees featuring paintings, film stills, and quotes from the late artist. Their label Anzevino and Florence has since evolved with the beautiful basics we reported on from Pool last year, to their latest foray into high fashion.
In a palette of black, grey, white, and cream, the Anzevino and Florence Fall/Winter 09 collection is predominantly an effortlessly feminine range of dresses and blouses featuring striking silhouettes and unique fabrics. A slight masculine touch is inherent with pieces like the Football shirt (girlie-d up with lace detail on the shoulders), as well as the Double Lapel and Cropped Sleeve blazers.
The signature style of A&F comes from their love of focussing on the minor details – “a small change to a traditional idea” – as they remodel basic pieces with origami folds, asymmetric silhouettes, cut-outs, and various manipulations of fabrics and textures.
Personal favourites would have to be the use of a trashbag-style fabric (actually Italian black nylon) for the Trashbag jacket, dress, and top. Other special mentions go to the Sylvester puffer-style jacket, 4 Tone Tank (made from silk jersey, silk charmeuse, crinkled chiffon, and cotton jersey), and the cute Carwash and Miss Muffet dresses.
