The Craftmanship of Sally Torres Vega

When I first saw the work of Puerto Rican clothing designer Sally Torres Vega, I immediately thought of the dresses and blouses sold in many Lower East Side boutiques, such as Pixie Market and TG-170. Since Vega makes all of the clothes herself by hand, each seam, ruffle, and dart are sewn with extra care. This detailing greatly enhances the quality of the pieces, and helps the clothing become not just an outfit – but a statement. Vegas explains:

“My work reinterprets classic silhouettes in fashion history and works around the basics of garment-making; such as the possibilities of craftsmanship and design in texture, color and form. I make clothes in order to explore a woman’s dignity and grace.”

Standouts in Vegas’ current and previous collections include her summery white dresses with hot pink accents and her series of sheer black shirts with multicolored neon accents. Although the tops would certainly be work-friendly with a tank top underneath, we think the they would mesh best with a simple black bandeau….and a healthy dose of confidence.

We hope to see Vegas’ work available in the U.S., but until then, please contact her through her website for any inquiries at www.sallytorresvega.com.
