M.I.S.S. Michelle's Beauty Tips of the Week: Poker Faced – A Tutorial on Face Contouring

I’m obsessed with stage and television makeup techniques and how they can be translated to fit into a person’s regular makeup regimen and lifestyle. I’ve found that essentially, face contouring, which plays on light and shadow, (a.k.a. using bronzer, blush, and a highlighter together), can create a dramatic change in the everyday appearance of the skin, resulting in the optical illusion of a significantly younger looking complexion, weight loss, and improved bone structure. This week’s tips are a How To lesson on face contouring that anyone can easily and quickly do with the right tools.

What you Need:

A BRONZER like L’Oreal Bare Naturale Gentle Mineral Blush in Shimmering Bronze, $14.99 but usually on SALE 50% off or at a 2 for 1 Price

AN ANGLED CONTOUR MAKEUP BRUSH like MAC’s $32 – BRUSHES ARE ALWAYS WORTH INVESTING IN. Nordstrom sells a GREAT 5 piece travel set, which includes a contour brush, during the holidays for $48 (can also find on Ebay)
EBAY WARNING: There is A LOT of FAKE MAC Makeup on Ebay, so here is a GUIDE on AUTHENTIC vs. FAKE MAC Makeup Brushes.

A BLUSH like Revlon’s Berry Flirtations – $8.99

A HIGHLIGHTER
like Yves Saint Laurent Touche Éclat Radiant Touch $40

Instructions:

Follow your normal cleansing and moisturizing routine. Prep skin with a primer like Photo Finish Foundation Primer by Smashbox and use concealer, foundation and/or powder as you normally would. Next, contour the face with following steps.

1. Apply BRONZER to the following areas:
A. Under cheek bones
B. Down the middle of the nose
C. Lightly across the top of the forehead
D. Sides of face
E. Under jawbone

2. Apply BLUSH to the following areas:
A. Apples of cheeks
B. Very, very lightly on the tip of the nose

3. Apply HIGHLIGHTER to the following areas:
A. Above the end tip of the brow
B. Under browbone
C. Inner corners of the eye
D. Under eye to the top of the apples of the cheeks
E. Above cupid’s bow on lip
F. One line above each nostril down the sides of the nose
G. In the hollow of the chin

Finally, apply any other makeup you plan on wearing. Once you get the areas down, I just apply the bronzer, blush, and highlighter as if I was making the sign of the cross on my face, the entire process of face contouring will only take about 60 seconds, and you are left with wonderfully chiseled cheekbones, radiantly glowing skin, and just a natural and beautiful healthy looking complexion. You can also use this same sort of technique to enhance your bustline, check out my post: Putting the Cleave in Cleavage for the How Tos.
