We tipped you off to the Dust La Rock event last week and we hope you didn’t decide to Netflix instead….because this event was off the meat rack!
After a fast-moving line at the Christopher Henry Gallery on Elizabeth Street, we checked out the first floor of Dust La Rock’s “Best of the Beast” (BOTB) exhibit and were greeted with some cold Red Stripes. Good way to butter us up. The night got exponentially better from there, because by the second floor the art got pretty boss.
Continue the read to see more of Dust La Rock’s work and some of the par-tay people!
Dust’s pieces have mostly been associated with musicians (as we described in our forer post about the New Brunswick native), but this time the paintings illustrated the Artist Known as La Rock on a deeper level. Most of the work incorporated religious references, including the numbers 666, Satan and other “beastly” characters, the apple from the story of Adam and Eve, Hebrew, pentagrams, heaven, hell, the letters IHS and so on. Oh yeah, and fingers and pianos and possibly a Pink Floyd reference? It was getting deep! But rather than tell you what you are supposed to see, we would rather you take a look at the flicks yourselves and give us your interpretation. Drop those art history refs on us, ladies. We’re not scared.
Besides all the beautiful artwork, the people that showed up to the event made the room pretty dazzling as well. We spotted Claw Money in a SICK Moschino jacket, Erin of MadeMe looking like the Madonna incarnate, and music genius/stylist/just cute as hell “Around the Way Girl” Radio Rose. On our way out we noticed Roxy Cottontail with some pink hair and a bespectacled-Bijules looking as amazing as ever. The music was fantastic too, but we couldn’t figure out where the DJ booth was for the life of us.
As great as the night was, it ended on a sad note: We overheard someone proclaim that some of the “fingers” from the 3D exhibit were missing – incredibly disheartening. So disrespectful to the artist. And as you can see from the pictures, people were using the apple installation as a table for their empties! So wrong…..Unless Dust meant for that to happen to illustrate some type of ill juxtaposition. It’s all about interpretation, perhaps!
