A Spike Lee Joint: “Kobe Doin’ Work” Screening at Nike Sportswear NYC

Kobe Doin' Work: A Spike Lee Joint

Kobe Doin' Work: A Spike Lee Joint

Last week, Nike Sportswear held an advanced screening of Spike Lee‘s documentary on Kobe Bryant, “Kobe Doin’ Work“. Held at 21 Mercer, they transformed the store into a mini sized movie theater complete with popcorn and nachos! You got the perks of the theater but the luxury of someone bringing it to you and no sticky floors here folks!

Many people gathered at 21 Mercer for the advanced screening of Kobe Doin' Work.

Many people gathered at 21 Mercer for the advanced screening of Kobe Doin' Work.

Spike Lee was in attendance and introduced the film. For the next 83 minutes we watched Kobe at work. The film followed him during the Lakers face off with the San Antonio Spurs in the Spring of 2008. Wearing a wireless mic and 30 cameras from all different angles on him the viewer gets an intimate look at Kobe on the court and in the locker room. Kobe narrates the film and shares his thoughts and feelings during the game, after the game and about the game. He talks about how running out onto the court before the game still gives him “goosebumps”. Watching the game Kobe gives you the inside scoop on how certain players play and what to watch out for. He laughs and jokes along the way, talking trash in Italan to teammate Sasha Vijacic, Kobe calls his team “the United Nations of Basketball” with teammates hailing from so many different Countries. After the game win or lose he always reflects what could have gone better on the court. Although not the coach, he was portrayed as a mentor and leader amongest his team. And really when you got the skills to pay the bills and the years of experience like Kobe, this makes complete sense.

We Got The Beat: Easy Star All-Stars

Easy Star All-Stars releases third tribute album, Lonely Hearts Dub Band

Easy Star All-Stars releases third tribute album, Lonely Hearts Dub Band

It all started with Dub Side of the Moon, a Pink Floyd tribute album that re-imagined the classic album Dark Side of the Moon in a Dub format. In 2006, it was followed up by Radiodread, this time giving the same song-by-song island vibe treatment to Radiohead’s Ok Computer. This month, the Easy Star All-Stars released a third tribute album, Easy Star’s Lonely Hearts Dub Band, a revised version of the legendary Beatles Album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.

So who are the Easy Star All-Stars? They’re a group of some of the most talented reggae artists in New York City; a rotating cast and collective of artists that are signed to their own Easy Star imprint and work under the guidance of musical director Michael Goldwasser (a.k.a. Michael G), frequent production partner Victor Axelrod (a.k.a. Ticklah), and Easy Star execs Eric Smith and Lem Oppenheimer. As individual artists, the the band’s vocalists and instrumentalists have toured and recorded with Burning Spear, Toots and the Maytals, Jimmy Cliff, Gil Scott-Heron, The Toasters, The Meditations, Bernie Worrell, DJ Logic, MC Solaar, King Django, Antibalas, The Scofflaws, Diana King, Dennis Brown, Monty Alexander, Sister Carol, and many others. The artists all come together in various and always changing permutations to record and put on a show, which creates an element of surprise for each performance.

Anyways, if you’re a fan of reggae music, and/or the Beatles, I definitely suggest checking out the album on Easy Star’s Lonely Hearts Dub Band imeem page or get a preview after the jump - we’ve got a little video introduction to the album as well. If you like what you hear, hunt down the other two tribute albums, I’m sure you won’t be disappointed.

Do You Read Romance?

Harlequin offers a free e-book download for one of their steamy, romance novels.

Harlequin offers a free e-book download for one of their steamy, romance novels.

So….do any of you guys read romance novels? Over the past year and a half, I have become utterly addicted to reading romance novels. It may have something to do with the fact that I’m not getting any nookie, let alone romance, but to tell the whole truth, it all started with the first assignment I had in my Women In Modern Fiction class I took in college, which was to read a romance novel.  I went to my local supermarket, and picked up the most contemporary, and seemingly filthiest one I could find. I read it, thinking it was going to be a chore. But I was wrong. I loved it.

Romance novels actually make up about 50% of all paperback book sales in this country, so I know I’m the only chick succumbing to the lure. Since the 1930′s catagory romance novels, such as the ones printed by Harlequin and Silhouette have been providing a romantic and erotic escape for women from all walks of life. Whether you currently read romance, or are a sexytime book virgin, I have and will be supplying some treats for you from time to time, courtesy of Harlequin, the catagory queens of this here game.

Until May 31st, visit HarlequinHistoricalUndone.com, and use the coupon code UNDONEFREE to recieve one free download of a Harlequin Historical e-book for your perusal. If you like it, leave a comment. I’d love to know what you guys think!
