The ‘80s influences are here to stay, at least throughout the rest of spring! We got our first glimpse of the Hellz Bellz Spring 2009 line back in March when the first installment entitled “Culture Clash” dropped. The second batch of spring goodies is now here – “Renegades of Funk” – and it pays homage to the song AND the electro movement made popular by Soul Sonic Force and Afrika Bambaataa. NO, we are not talking about the single “Planet Rock” that everyone and their mother knows. What the Hellz, you gotta give Lanie some credit – she knows her Bambaataa inside and out, and her sources of inspiration are not the typical, overused examples usually referenced in hip-hop.

Lanie continues to focus on geometric prints in bright colors as in the first release, but this line introduces pieces with more flexible and active fabrics. It’s time to break dance, ya’ll, and the shorter the short, the stankier the leg. The bad-ass combat attitudes come through with the tough females on the tees and the “Survive or Die” and “Respect Our Shit” slogans. The Bambaataa headdress, Breakin’ 2: Electric Boogaloo-style felt hat, and feathered earrings help to bring out the renegade in these looks. Peep the original video for “Renegade of Funk” and the combat scene video from Breakin’ 2 to see just how close these references are! This ain’t no Paula Abdul-‘80s, ladies.
