On April 7th, Dutch photographer Jacqueline Hassink will be having a book signing and party hosted by Dashwood Books to promote her latest work entitled Car Girls.

Hassink is the artist responsible for the much appraised exhibition Tables of Power, (1993-1995) which was photographed with wide angles highlighting the vastness of 40 of Europe’s most powerful multi-nationals’ board rooms.

Her latest monograph Car Girls features photographs taken at major car shows in seven very different cities (New-York, Paris, Geneva, Tokyo, Detroit, and Shanghai) spanning three continents. In her words, these sites reflect on “differing cultural values with regard to their ideal images of beauty and women. The series captures the moments during the women’s performances when they become more like dolls or tools than individuals.”  The book illustrates in a particularly beautiful way issues of gender, power and commodification.

The event on April 7th runs from 6 pm until 8pm, and the following Tuesday April 14th at 6:30 pm. Hassink will give a talk and book signing at Aperture Gallery. Both events are free of charge.

There are only 1500 copies of “Car Girls” so come all, come many…come promptly because they might run out.

Jacqueline Hassink also published Mindscapes (2003), The Power Book (2007), and Domains of Influence (2008). She is a visiting professor at the University of Art and Design in Helsinki, teaching the postgraduate photography program, and at Harvard teaching the Visual and Environmental Studies program. But, fret not; professors do know how to get down…especially ones with artistic inclinations.
