Today we honor Deirdre O’Boyle and Stacy Rodgers, of the lovely clothing brand She-bible, as Women Making History. These two gals work hard and play hard so they design clothes for both! Best friends since their junior year of high school, She-bible emerged from years of laughing, loving, doodling and designing—not to mention a few fantastic mistakes and many lessons learned. It started in the kitchen with a hand-made screen printing press and has grown into a cut and sew label offering reliably sexy and comfy pieces perfect for kicking up dirt and kicking up your heels.
The ladies of She-bible call San Francisco their beloved home and so do their designs. All She-bible goods are sewn and printed in the City by the Bay.
The She-bible mission statement is simple but effective: Small and Sweatshop free and local production, Organic fabrics, women run business, creating clothing we like and feel good about.
More on these great ladies and a look at some fun pieces for Spring, after the jump!
A few pieces from the She-Bible Spring 2009 collection….and below a handwritten survey from each lady…
The Q&A with Stacy and Deirdre:
1. What woman, besides your mom or grandmother, do you find inspirational?
It was hard to narrow down a list of amazing and inspirational women. I mean, duh, women rule and there are tons of us!!! But we thought a modern day woman we find to be inspirational would be Miranda July. It’s inspiring to see someone able to express themself directions. Performance artist, musician, writer, actress and film director. She does it all and she does it well. Oh and of course, we love her style.
2. How did you get your start?
We got our start by printing American Apparel shirts in our kitchen with our homemade screenprinting press. We would even dry shirts in the oven to cure the inks. We sold the tees to a couple of local boutiques. Deirdre did a lot of store research and when she would find a store she really liked, she would send them a tee and a little catalog. Our catalogs were printed in our home office and sewn together to bind them.
3. What’s your favorite piece of (art, music, fashion, client etc) that you’ve created?
I’d have to say our favorite piece is our Classic Dress. It fits a lot of different bodies and is our best seller. That dress seriously keeps us in business, how could it not be our favorite piece. Although the Seacliff Coat sure is cozy!
4. Who do you want to (work with, dress, make music with, etc)?
I’d love to see foxy ladies like Zoey Dechanel and Maggie Gyllenhaal in our stuff.
5. What part of “your process” (customize to what they do and remove quotations) is the most challenging and do you dislike the most?
Production is by far the worst. It is really difficult and stressful. Deirdre and I get huge pits in our stomach during this process. So many things can go wrong and we’ve definitely learned a lot of hard lessons through it.
Thanks ladies! Miranda July’s definitely someone I admire, as well! Oh! And I can totally see Zoey and Maggie dressed in She-bible! Below are more images from the upcoming Spring 2009 collection! Dropping super soon!
Whooo’s that lady?! Below is our very own M.I.S.S. Liz “BLB” Baca modeling some lovely dresses!
