This week has been a busy one for our fashion capital Melbourne with the Loreal Melbourne Fashion Festival (LMFF) having run since last Sunday. On the first night of shows label Romance Was Born blew audiences away with their Yeti-inspired collection of quirky-layered garments. You heard that right, I said Yeti.
With a love of all thing kitsch, Sydney duo Anna Plunkett and Luke Sales are the masterminds of Romance Was Born – so passionate about their line they famously knocked back internships with Galliano (!) in favour of working on their own designs. The ballsy gamble paid off and their wares have been worn by the likes of Karen O, M.I.A., Lilly Allen, and Debbie Harry.
With past inspirations including TV shows Weird Science and Captain Planet, the mythical Yeti idea shouldn’t faze anyone. The collection featured slashed fabrics, some great use of dip-dye, and hand-stripped fringing that flickered as the models walked. Although the overall hues were mostly subdued and dark, Plunkett and Sales kept it fun with pops of white, washed out red, and sky blue. While the idea sounds like garments border on costume, the pieces are definitely wearable!
The collection also won the duo the coveted LMFF Designer of the Year Award, winning them a trip to either Pitti Filatti in Florence or Premier Vision in Paris, along with $10 000 cold hard cash – a huge win for the label.
