M.I.S.S. VEGAS 02.09: Converse at Project

Kid’s Rubber Chuck Taylor All Star High

Kid’s Rubber Chuck Taylor All Star High

My “go to” kicks these days are black leather Chuck Taylor All Star Highs so it was a no-brainer to pay them a visit at the Project Tradeshow.  We got up close and personal with some old greats and new styles releasing soon.  Converse has its roots as a rubber company so one of the key themes for new styles is the use of rubber as much more than the sole, the rubber has moved on up to the upper of the shoe.  My favorite, sadly, is a style that I can’t buy because it’s made only for kids!  It’s an all RUBBER Chuck Taylor All Star High - THE perfect rain shoe ever!  I’m not a fan of clunky rain boots so when I saw these I instantly needed them. Converse, if you’re listening, please make these in lady sizes!  Converse is also issuing rubber rain boots (for men) and John Varvatos has done a gorgeous reissue of the actual rainboot used in WWII by American soldiers updated with the best water repellent technology out today (water resistent, stitched down tongue and 3M thinsulate).  Sadly, these styles are for men but I would wear the WWII reissue in a heartbeat.   There were no rubber, rain boot alternatives for the ladies but we’re hoping they’ll be in the near future.

Converse also had some great collaborative projects including a Woolrich series with Woolrich wool uppers, a Jams collab celebrating the surfing lifestyle, and a continuation of the music series.  The bands featured in the coming season’s rock and roll project includes Metallica and AC/DC, two bands with a rich visual history.  The Metallica pack includes 2 Pushead designs and a style with the Metallica logo from the Ride the Lightening album across the back.  The AC/DC pack includes the ever popular “back in black” reference, and a re-issue of the Scout shoe (originally designed for the Boy Scouts in the 1970s) to acknowledge Angus Young’s school boy antics.  All in all, Converse has some really great styles coming out to suite many different tastes.

M.I.S.S. VEGAS 02.09: Rocksmith at SLATE/M.A.G.I.C.

Rocksmith is a men’s brand that is taking baby steps into the women’s market.  Their 90′s hip hop inspired graphcis are clever, colorful and fun.  TLC, Black Sheep and the Notorious B.I.G. (with a Basquiat twist) references abound and bright pops of color on a palette of mainly black and white make these tees a solid foray in the women’s market.

M.I.S.S. VEGAS 02.09: Rojas SS09 and Fall Preview at Pool

Rojas SS09 and Fall Preview at Pool

Rojas SS09 and Fall Preview at Pool

Freddie Rojas has spent his entire life in the fashion industry, from his childhood to his Rojas clothing line and boutique.  He knows every aspect of the business from marketing, design, pattern making and production - and it shows in collection after collection. Each season, he creates clothing for men and women that is wearable and effortlessly stylish. He works with and develops new textiles, designs flattering and unique silhouettes and is always ahead of the trends. For Spring/Summer 2009, his inspiration for the collection is Blossom, think floral prints, bustiers, mini-skirts and button-up tops that are longer in the back.  Freddie manages to take a fictional teenager’s innocent look and give it a sexy modern spin that leaves me wanting every piece!  I especially love the pearl necklace/ties - so cute!  The color palatte is black, light blue, violet and mustard yellow with white as the unifying color. All of the pieces coordinate with each other and are perfect for day, night, work and play.
