Best of The East Bay 2008 Party

I headed out to the Oakland Museum a couple of weeks ago to check-out The East Bay Express’s ‘Best of The East Bay 2008’ Party. What a fine example of the culture, diversity and love we have here in the Bay. The event was all ages, free and included live art, dance battles, live music performances (HOTTUB), food, vendors and access to their current exhibit: Birth of the Cool: California Art, Design and Culture at Midcentury.

The fisrt thing that greeted me were these painted newspaper stands…

See way more after the jump!! Even vintage clothing scores! Yes, there was vintage clothing vendors!!

Screen-printing was going down with VG Kids

Local vintage shops Twisters, Dolled Up Vintage. Icon/Retro Diva set-up shop. Um, you know I was in HEAVEN!! Peep my come-up here…so good!

Live graffiti was going down…

Circus entertainment by Splash Circus…these young ladies were amazing!!

Best of The Bay breakdance battle going down…

The Ladies of HOTTUB. They killed it, as usual and even managed to piss of the sound guy, which wasn’t even their fault! Really dude, lighten up, how it is their fault that everyone wants to dance with them on stage!?!?

And now the exhibit. There are two part to this exhibit, I only made it to Cool Remixed: Urban Art and Culture Now. Local youth did the damn thing! runs through August 17th.

Curators Evelyn Orantes and Christine Lashaw invited local artists and Oakland community organizations—the East Bay Asian Youth Center (EBAYC), Oakland High’s Visual Arts Academy (VAAMP), Town Park, Visual Element of the EastSide Arts Alliance, Youth Radio, and Youth UpRising—to create art and installations for the exhibition.

Cool Remixed reflects the relationship youth have with their environment, how they create personal space and define themselves,? said Orantes, cultural arts developer at the museum. “What has surfaced from our discussions and their artwork is a real sense of pride in being from O-town.?

A time-line of the word “Cool” from it’s African origin from the 1950’s thru the 2000’s…
