“Dear Diary” began as a column in Vice Magazine in which Lesley Arfin would take an old diary entry, from her high school and college days, and then write an update with the insight that 10 years gives you. Taking the column as a starting point, Vice Books has published her first book “Dear Diary.” The book is an accumulation of diary entries with current updates, along with “frienemy” timelines and present day interviews with key figures from her diary entries. “Dear Diary” takes you on a journey of Lesley’s experiences in junior high through college, covering the progression from punk rock girl, to raver girl, to heroine addict, to writer about town. Though the “Diary” chronicles Arfin’s own experiences, all ladies can see a glimmer of their own experiences in her work. The first love, the heartbreak, the “frienemies” – all women go through it growing up and the way Arfin puts her heart on her sleeve is endearing and honest. This book is a fun quick read, thoroughly entertaining and makes you realize how far you’ve come from the days of junior high. I highly recommend it and I look forward to Arfin’s future works. The book drops on June 7th but you can pre-order it here.
