Coty Inks Scent Deal With Kate Moss

Kate Moss plans to punctuate her comeback story with her own signature scent.

With her short-lived fall from grace behind her, the model has signed a fragrance deal with Coty Inc., the beauty firm that stood by the supermodel when she battled allegations of cocaine abuse in 2005.

Describing the fragrance concept, Steve Mormoris, senior vice president of global marketing for Coty Beauty, said it was “a mix of elegant and risqué,” with smoky rose and black undertones and a vintage English feel. He added that the “complicated floral” scent reflected the duality of Moss. “It captures the two sides of Kate: the good Kate and the bad Kate,” said Mormoris.

The fragrance, which has yet to be named, is slated to be launched in Europe, the Middle East and Australia in September, followed by a rollout to North America and Latin America one year later.

Coty will rely on a multitier distribution strategy for the Moss scent which will include department stores, drugstores and perfumeries. “We will cascade the distribution, starting at the luxury level,” said Mormoris. He would not reveal the terms of the deal, but said Coty had signed a long-term contract with Moss and expected to “create a house of fragrances” under the model’s direction.

The scent deal broadens Coty’s relationship with Moss. In 2001, Coty picked Moss as the global spokesperson for its edgy, London-born cosmetics line, Rimmel London. Since then, Rimmel has generated high-single-digit to double-digit year-over-year sales growth and now reaps about $400 million globally.

Mormoris said Coty had considered leveraging its association with Moss for some time. “Now that she has come into her own as a beauty icon with a global presence, the timing is right,” he said.

Moss, who previously was the Chanel fragrance model for Coco Mademoiselle, said in statement, “For me, Coty is the ideal partner to create my own scent. I’ve been delighted to work with Coty over the years and am pleased to collaborate with them on my first fragrance.”

Moss will continue to be the global face of Rimmel London.
